Associate Lawyer

Maxwell C. Putnam is an Associate Lawyer with Putnam & Lawson and was called to the Alberta Bar in 2017. He worked at the firm as a law student during his summers in law school, and subsequently completed his articles with the firm.

Although born in Canada, Max grew up in Asia on account of his father’s work as an international airline pilot. Max spent over a decade in the Chinese city of Hong Kong, in addition to time in Australia. Max completed his high school at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong in 2009, and then returned to Canada to attend Queen’s University in Ontario for the completion of his undergraduate degree, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2013 while studying both History and Biology.

Max moved to Alberta to attend law school, completing his Juris Doctor degree at the University of Calgary in 2016. While in law school, he volunteered as a caseworker for the Student Legal Assistance clinic, providing free legal information and representation to low income residents of Calgary. Max also participated in the school’s Environmental Law Clinic, where he assisted in a law suit against the Federal Government of Canada, successfully obtaining legal protection for the critical habitat of the endangered native Westslope Cutthroat Trout species.

Max practices primarily in the areas of residential, agricultural, and commercial real estate, corporate law, contracts, and litigation. His practice has involved appearances in both Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench.

Outside of his legal career, Max is an avid ball hockey and rugby player, and enjoys hiking trips in the Rockies. He was a varsity track & field athlete during his undergraduate studies, competing for Queen’s University. Max enjoys strong family ties to the region, with both of his parents being born and raised in the area. He is also a nephew of Gordon Putnam of Putnam & Lawson.
